Registration of Assault Guns

The article about massive noncompliance of the so-called “assault weapons” law was wrong in one area. It stated:

“Among other things, the law made it illegal . . . to sell . . . about 60 types of military-style assault guns. . . .”

Your use of the word “type” is incorrect. The law banned about 60 makes (that is, brand name) weapons, not 60 types. Because the law specifically banned brands of firearms, a Colt AR-15 is illegal, but an exact, all parts fully interchangeable, copy of the AR-15 made by, for example, Olympic Arms, or Eagle Arms, is legal and need not be registered.
