BANKING
Thrifts score high: When playing with the heavyweights in the S&L; industry, two Orange County thrifts have matched up quite well, according to an industry publication.
Western Financial Savings Bank in Irvine and Downey Savings & Loan in Newport Beach placed second and fifth, respectively, in a ranking by United States Banker magazine of the performance of the nation’s 100 largest thrifts for the year ended June 30.
The thrifts were scored on the basis of their reserves, amount of bad loans, capital and return on assets, which is a standard measure of profitability.
