P.M. BRIEFING : Cellular Phone Allows Screening
From Times Wire Services
ANAHEIM — Universal Cellular Inc. said today it plans to introduce the first pocket-sized cellular telephone with a built-in pager, allowing the owner to screen calls.
“While people on the move want to be in touch, they also want to maintain a level of privacy,” said James Wohl, founder and chief executive officer. “The user is both in touch and in control, but is never forced to accept a call when it is inconvenient.”
Privately held Universal Cellular said the PagerPhone, weighing 13 ounces and about 5 1/2 inches long, would be available in West Coast stores early next month.
The suggested retail price is $1,895, meaning it will probably be available through discounters for about $1,400.
