South Korean President Roh Tae Woo arrived in Moscow on Thursday, the first South Korean head of state to visit the Soviet Union.

Roh, accompanied by his wife and a 15-person entourage that included Foreign Minister Choi Ho Joong, landed in the Soviet capital Thursday afternoon and had an evening meeting with President Mikhail S. Gorbachev.

Roh has said he will try to secure Gorbachev’s help in ending the Cold War confrontation between North and South Korea. Gorbachev is expected to press for greatly expanded economic cooperation with South Korea.

The two leaders are expected to sign agreements for increased trade and economic cooperation. Roh said in Seoul that his country would like to import natural gas, timber and coal from the Soviet Union as well as technological expertise in exchange for electrical appliances, cars and other goods.

Gorbachev and Roh, whose countries had been adversaries since the end of World War II, met in San Francisco six months ago, and their governments announced Sept. 30 that they would establish diplomatic relations.
