Frank Ellsworth, president of Pitzer College in Claremont since 1979, has announced his resignation, effective at the end of the school year. Ellsworth is to become president of the Independent Colleges of Southern California, an association of private institutions of higher education.

Pitzer, which has more than 700 students, is part of the Claremont Colleges consortium and specializes in social sciences and intercultural studies. Ellsworth, 47, was the youngest person ever to be appointed the head of a Claremont college and Pitzer, founded in 1963, is the youngest of those six schools.

Pitzer’s Board of Trustees is to appoint a committee of trustees, alumni, faculty and students to search for a new president.
