South El Monte : 1 of 2 Bar Licenses Approved
The City Council conditionally approved a license renewal for a North Durfee Avenue nightspot, but denied a license to a second after sheriff’s deputies said there had been arrests in the parking area that serves both establishments.
The arrests were for attempted murder, armed robbery, auto theft, drug sales, drunk driving and other crimes, officials said.
Renewal of the food and alcohol license for El Leon Del Mar, 1955 N. Durfee Ave., was approved. A license for Joe & Aldo’s Club, 1935 N. Durfee Ave., was denied.
Lawyers for the two clubs said no charges had been filed in any of the cases, and the clubs owners have hired uniformed guards to patrol the area.
Deputy City Manager Steve Henley said the council took into consideration that El Leon Del Mar has been in business at the location longer and that “more serious allegations were made about incidents inside Joe & Aldo’s.”
Renewal of the license for El Leon Del Mar hinged on the hiring of security guards and on the condition that no incidents occur during a 90-day probation.
