COSTA MESA : City Raises Funds for Fairview Centers

The Special Olympics Program at Fairview Developmental Center this week received $1,500 raised during the annual City-Chamber-State Golf Tournament held at Costa Mesa Country Club in September.

About 25 of the center’s 1,100 developmentally disabled students take part in the Special Olympics’ spring activities, according to Jean Larsen, assistant to director Hugh Kohler. The golf tournament is the only Special Olympics fund-raiser for them, Larsen said.

“This usually pays for their uniforms and other expenses like that,” Larsen said.

The city has held charitable tournaments for Fairview for many years, said Keith Van Holt, director of Community Services.

Last weekend, the city held its annual Toys for Fairview Golf Tournament and raised, according to preliminary estimates, $12,500 in cash and toys for the Fairview Environmental Center, Van Holt said.

Golfers paid a $5 entry fee, which was reduced for the tournament, and were required to bring toys worth $20 or more each. The tournament drew 300 players, the largest number in its 10-year history, Van Holt said.
