HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Walton Gives Helix Victory in Spartan Classic
Gary Walton made two free throws with four seconds remaining to give Helix a 63-62 victory over Chula Vista in the Spartan Classic at Chula Vista Friday.
Helix (8-4) will play Redondo Union, which defeated Mira Mesa, 76-59, in tonight’s championship at 6 p.m.
Chula Vista was down by nine going into the fourth quarter but Jerome Green’s three three-pointers helped the Spartans close the gap. With nine seconds remaining, Ken McDuffy made two free throws to put Chula Vista ahead, 62-61.
After Walton’s free throws the Spartans had the chance but just couldn’t score.
Helix was led by Lloyd Lake with 15 points. Derrick Henry and Jason Falconer each scored 11 points for the Highlanders. Henry also had seven rebounds.
Green led Chula Vista (6-6) with 19 points and Shane Howell added 16. Donnie Edwards led the Spartans with seven rebounds.
In other Spartan Classic games:
Redondo Union 76, Mira Mesa 59--Mira Mesa’s Ryan Cunningham led all scorers with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Ronnie Grim’s scored 30 points and had six rebounds for Redondo, which jumped to a 45-28 halftime lead. Mira Mesa dropped to 6-6.
San Dieguito 77, Crawford 46--Sean Howard scored 20 points and had eight rebounds for San Dieguito (6-4). Matt De La Pena added 16 points and three rebounds. Crawford (2-6) was led by Kadir Nelson with 18 points.
Hilltop 55, Oceanside 42--Courtenay Brown led Hilltop (5-7) with 21 points and rebounds. Carlos Marques added 14 points and Chris White scored 12 for the Lancers. Marlon Jenkins scored 14 points for Oceanside (3-7).
Mt. Carmel Tournament
USDHS 64, El Camino 63--Eric Barajas drained a 17-foot jumper with eight seconds remaining to give USDHS (6-2) the upset over No. 2 El Camino.
The Wildcats trailed most of the game until making some three-pointers in a last-quarter charge, where they outscored the Dons’, 20-11. El Camino led 63-62 with 56 seconds left and missed a free throw at the foul line that USDHS rebounded and held onto.
Sean Scurry and Jeff Reeves led El Camino with 18 apiece. Barajas had a high of 23.
Burroughs (Burbank) 61, Monte Vista 51--Jabari Williams’ 20 points led this consolation semifinal that fell short as Burroughs (4-6) outscored Monte Vista (7-5), 22-12 in the third quarter. Rick Mulloy scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds for Burroughs.
Sweetwater Classic
Sweetwater 70, Montgomery 41--Melvin Rushing scored 19 points and Mendel Nafarrete had 14 for Sweetwater, which led 35-23 at halftime. Leslie Shaw led Montgomery with 16 points and Edel Apatan added 12.
St. Augustine 77, Mar Vista 64--St. Augustine, which took a 44-27 halftime lead, was led by Mark Magee with 18 points. John Gergurich added 13 points and Victor Bucardo scored 12 for the Saints. Mar Vista was led by Chris Anglin with 25 points.
Kearny 65, San Diego 64--Kearny came back from a four-point third quarter deficit and outscored San Diego, 18-13, in the final quarter. Mike Oviedo led Kearny with 23 points. Mike Watson scored 18 and John McKenna added 16 for San Diego.
Coast Christmas Classic
Morse 83, Kennedy (La Palma) 76--The Tigers’ recouped from its overtime loss Thursday and was again led by Darnell Cherry. Cherry’s 26 points led the night, with help from three other Morse players in double digits.
Brea Olinda Tournament
Rancho Buena Vista 69, Fallbrook 55--Darryl Parker’s 22 points led RBV (4-6) past another North County team in an out-of-town tournament. Chris Miller scored 17 points in a losing effort for Fallbrook (7-4).
Ramona Rotary Roundball Tournament
Ramona 88, Southwest 73--Travis Knight had 24 points and five blocked shots and guard Clint Cook, who was nine-for-10 from the field in the first half, had 23 to spark Ramona, which advanced to today’s 8:45 p.m. championship game against Agoura. Alfonzo De La Nuez added 16 points and five assists, as Ramona outscored Southwest, 29-16, in the second quarter.
San Marcos 77, Calipatria 68--The Knights evened its season at 3-3 with Eric Wilburn’s 25 points and 11 rebounds leading the way. Evan Osmundson added 15 points and six rebounds for San Marcos.
Agoura 105, Castle Park 68--Benji Gil had 28 points and Eric Bell 19 in a losing semifinal effort for Castle Park (5-4). Agoura’s Sean Martin topped all scorers with 31. Agoura improved to 5-2.
Anaheim Canyon Tournament
Canyon Country Canyon 84, Vista 71--Chris Johnson was the hero in Vista’s (4-6) one-point victory over Anaheim Thursday, but Friday he was held to 16 points, second on his team to Nils Michals, who scored 19.
Senior forward Jermaine Nixon had 26 points and senior guard Lance Moore had a school-record 18 assists, to lead Canyon (8-4) to the consolation final.
Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic
Poway 80, Rancho (Las Vegas) 50--Kyle Milling scored 24 points and pulled down 20 rebounds for Poway (6-2).
Nonleague
Bishop’s 55, Marian 53--After Marian led throughout, Bishop’s Tchiu Ly hit a three-pointer to win it at the buzzer. Bishop’s led 6-2 early, but Marian came back to tie it 8-8 midway through the first quarter, then led the rest of the game up to the end.
Joe Lagula’s 24 points were a game-high for Marian (9-5). Steve Runyan scored 15 and Justin Bloom 13 for Bishop’s (8-2).
Girls
Ramona Rotary Roundball Tournament
Santana 50, Valhalla 42--Stephanie Thompson led the Sultans (10-3) with 24 points and 17 rebounds in a semifinal game. Teammate Teresa Stippey added 20 points, her first time in double figures. Valhalla fell to 3-9.
Kearny 52, USDHS 46--Melissa Krause and twin sister Shelli scored 20 points apiece as the Komets improved to 9-4. Kelly O’Neill had a game-high 21 points for the Dons (3-3).
Ramona 43, West Hills 39--Trisha Montgomery had a game-high 17 points for West Hills, but Amy Moseley (16 points, 20 rebounds) and Nicki Knight (12 points) of Ramona (1-5) counteracted her effectiveness.
