7 Area Cities Will Recycle Christmas Trees for Mulch
Seven cities in the South Bay have made arrangements for Christmas trees to be recycled into compost or mulch.
The cities are Carson, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Rolling Hills, Palos Verdes Estates, Los Angeles and Torrance. Six of the cities will pick up the trees at the curb at various times from Dec. 31 through Jan. 11.
Los Angeles will recycle trees dropped off at Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. from now until Saturday, excluding New Year’s Day.
Torrance residents are asked to leave their trees with their trash on regular pick-up days during the 13-day period. Stands should be removed and trees cut in half. Flocked trees and trees left out before or after those dates will be collected but not recycled. Torrance’s trash service does not serve condominium and apartment developments or businesses.
Curbside collection of trees for single-family residences will take place during the same period in Carson, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. Stands, nails and ornaments must be removed. Flocked trees will be picked up with other garbage but not recycled. Trees from multi-unit housing and businesses will be collected from special bins. For the locations of the recycling bins, call Western Waste at 329-1425. Western Waste will deliver the trees to Kellogg Supply, which will recycle them into mulch.
Rolling Hills residents should place their trees with their usual refuse collection. A special, separate green-waste collection vehicle from Browning-Ferris Industries will pick up the trees. They will be mingled with other green waste and mulched.
Palos Verdes Estates offers a one-day curbside pick-up on Saturday.
