World IN BRIEF : CORSICA : Socialist Mayor Slain by Gunman

The Socialist mayor of Soveria was killed in front of his home by an unknown gunman during a mysterious blackout in his house. Paul Mariani, 55, was killed by four shots when he stepped outside his door to see who was throwing pebbles against the windows, police said. The motive for the shooting on the politically troubled French island in the Mediterranean was not known.
