ANAHEIM : Waste Recycler Faces $126,500 State Fine

A company that recycles industrial waste to recover precious metals faces a $126,500 fine for nine hazardous-waste violations, state health officials said Friday.

Pease & Curren Refining Inc., at 1315 Brasher St., operated from 1985 until last year without the required pollution liability insurance and installed four waste-storage tanks without notifying officials, according to a complaint issued by the state Department of Health Services. In August, 1990, an inspection showed that the company also failed to label drums of waste properly and violated various record-keeping laws, the complaint said.

Pease & Curren recovers gold and other precious metals from solutions it receives from other businesses, such as metal-plating factories and jewelers. The company has the right to appeal or ask to discuss the fine with the health department.
