Sweden’s Wiberg Takes 1st Victory in World Cup Slalom
BAD KLEINKIRCHHEIM, Austria — Pernilla Wiberg of Sweden captured her first World Cup victory today, taking the women’s slalom in this resort town in Carinthia province.
Wiberg had a two-heat time of 1 minute, 27.78 seconds on second-place runs of 45.53 and 42.25. She finished behind Austria’s Petra Kronberger (45.23) in the first heat and behind Kronberger’s teammate, Monika Maierhofer (41.92), in the second heat.
“I thought that in the second run I had to go as fast as I could, and it went well,” Wiberg said.
Maierhofer, who captured the second heat after an 11th-place finish in the first, finished second overall with a time of 1:28.36.
Chrstine von Grueningen of Switzerland was third in 1:28.42.
