Governor’s Legacy
Deukmejian will go down in history. He is very famous for his many vetoes. He did not veto the big boost in his retirement pension nor the big pay hikes for his political allies.
He did veto the cost-of-living allowance for the very needy and then gave them a cut in their SSI. The 5.4% pittance COLA in our small Social Security checks was quickly wiped out by the SSI cut. We won’t miss him, but we wish him much better health in his retirement than most of us unfortunate disabled have had.
