Coronado
Two men were arrested early Monday on suspicion of importing marijuana after 16 large duffel bags containing more than 1,800 pounds of the drug were discovered a short distance from them on a Coronado beach, police said.
Navy security officers found and detained the men about 1 a.m. near the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base, police said. The marijuana, with an estimated street value of $1.4 million, was found just south of where the men were sitting, across from Leyte Road, Coronado Police Lt. Bill Abel said.
John Allen, 34, of Chula Vista and Mark Hertenstein, 32, of Imperial Beach were booked on felony importation of marijuana charges at the County Jail in downtown San Diego, a jail spokeswoman said.
