Suspect Surrenders After 7-Hour Standoff
An armed Monterey Park man barricaded himself inside his home after a domestic dispute and held law enforcement officials at bay for seven hours, but surrendered Monday evening, authorities said.
Police went to the house after an anonymous call about 9 a.m. that shots had been fired. Eight houses in the 2400 block of South Hendricks Street were evacuated while sheriff’s deputies used a megaphone and telephone to talk with Phil Duran, 31.
Duran was booked at Monterey Park City Jail after being surrounded by members of the Sheriff Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team. He had cut his abdomen with a knife, but no other people were injured, Monterey Park Police Capt. Jim Strait said.
