AWESOME, DUDE: Shawn Stussy’s company may be on the short list of successes in beachwear these days (E1), but he hasn’t stopped making the product that got him there: surfboards. Stussy started designing surfboards when he was 13 and living in Huntington Beach. Ten years ago, living in Laguna Beach, he started making them under his own name and selling them for $300. Next he expanded into T-shirts, and then into shorts. . . . The company had “really innocent beginnings,” Stussy says. “I was a guy who made surfboards” and his partner was an accountant.
