MOORPARK : Summer School Lunch Program Leaves $500 Surplus

Moorpark Unified School District on Tuesday reported a $500 surplus from the 1990 summer school lunch program because state and federal funds reimbursed the district for thousands of meals served to students who are children of migrant workers.

School officials said the district received $9,027 from state and federal subsidies to pay for migrant students’ meals, which was 93% of all income from the lunches. Lunch sales to students not in the migrant program totaled $909.45.

“Federal reimbursement from those meals kept the summer school food service program running in the black,” said Carmela Vignocchi, assistant superintendent for business services.

During six weeks of summer school, 5,800 meals were served, 5,200 to migrant students, she said. The district reported expenditures for the program of $9,396.05.
