Anti-Semitism

I want to commend The Times for its pointed editorial on Polish anti-Semitism (“Against the Spirit of the Gospel,” Dec. 22).

I am a survivor of the Holocaust. I was raised in Bialystok, Poland, and during the war, I was held in several camps in Germany and in German-occupied Poland, including Auschwitz.

I shake my head in disbelief when reflecting upon those years and those of prewar Poland. I remember being leery of going outside on Sundays or on Christian holidays for fear the Poles, stirred into anti-Jewish fevers in church, would attack. More unbelievable is the continuing anti-Jewish hatred in a country now virtually without Jews. One hopes that the Roman Catholic bishop’s statement condemning anti-Semitism will be the first step in combatting a shameful record.
