Constitution Champs Get OK to Go to Finals
The West Covina Unified Board of Education gave the go-ahead Tuesday for the district’s champion constitutional scholars to compete in the state finals of the National Bicentennial Competition Thursday through Saturday 9in Sacramento.
The West Covina High School advanced placement government class, taught by Bernie Proch, placed first in the regional competition of the contest, which measures understanding of the Constitution. Proch’s class also won the competition last year.
The students must answer questions about the Constitution and analyze issues surrounding the original document and its amendments. They also are graded on their public speaking skills.
Sending the 21 students to compete in Sacramento will cost $5,500. Participating students will pay part of the cost.
