Garnes Leads SDSU to Victory Over Utah

Kieishsha Garnes scored 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the San Diego State women’s basketball team to an 87-80 victory over Utah in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday night at SDSU’s Peterson Gym. Garnes shot 13 of 19 from the field and four of five from the free-throw line.

Point guard Michelle Miles aided Garnes with eight points, 14 assists and four rebounds. Off guard Carmelia Bloodsaw had 22 points, including four three-pointers. The Aztecs, who shot 61% from the floor, improved to 9-5 and 2-0. Utah dropped to 10-7 and 1-1.

The University of San Diego blew a six-point lead with 6:56 left and lost to host Loyola Marymount, 64-60, in a West Coast Conference game. Christi English led USD (6-9, 1-1) with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Carrie Young scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead UC San Diego past visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 61-55. UCSD, which trailed by four at halftime, improved to 10-4. Carrie Carambas led PLNC with 10 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Yugoslav Emilio Kovacic, a 6-10 center, scored 25 points to lead Biola over Point Loma Nazarene College, 83-64, in a nonconference game. Mark Bulgin led PLNC (8-9) with 19 points.

Christian Heritage lost its fourth consecutive game, 87-70, to host Grand Canyon College in a nonconference game. Joey Allison led Grand Canyon (11-5) with 24 points and six assists. Christian Heritage dropped to 4-12.
