Big Churches
Regarding the article on “mega-churches” (Religion Jan. 5), if only Jesus had had the results of church planner Lyle Schaller’s research when many of his own disciples “withdrew and were not walking with him any more” (John 6:66). Who knows? Rather than crucified, he might have gotten his own TV ministry.
I’d take a small congregation that “visits orphans and widows in their distress and keeps itself unstained” by a callous, commercial world any day over the meaningless drivel propagated by those whose interests lie in building monuments to themselves. As if “good sales” meant “good news.” Mega-churches, phooey!
