Linkage Issue in Mideast Crisis

If Saddam Hussein wants his linkage between Israel and Kuwait, let him have it. Here is the real linkage: In 1948 Iraq sent its troops 1,000 miles and committed unprovoked aggression against the United Nations-approved state of Israel. Iraq repeated that aggression in 1967, and in August, 1990, Iraq swallowed up Kuwait. In 1948 Iraq caused Palestinian refugees and in 1990 it caused Kuwaiti refugees. In 1950 Iraq expelled its entire Jewish population, who found a home in Israel.

Iraq refuses to make peace or respect the territorial integrity of either Israel or Kuwait.

If Hussein now wishes to make peace with Israel and Kuwait, to respect their right to exist, to take in a half-million Palestinian refugees and pay compensation, it’s certainly worthwhile to talk about it.
