Carson Passes Water-Reduction Plan
At the urging of Carson’s primary water supplier, the City Council on Tuesday adopted a water conservation program aiming for a 10% reduction in residential and commercial consumption.
Residents, businesses and government agencies will be asked to reduce their usage compared to 1989 figures or face penalties on their bills. In addition to residential and commercial reductions, agricultural firms are being asked to cut back 30%.
The council adopted the program, 3 to 0, and the program goes into effect Feb. 1.
The Dominguez Water Corp., which provides the city with most of its water, will also offer a 22-cent credit per billing unit for all water savings of more than 10%, city officials said.
Dominguez Water had been requested by its primary wholesale supplier, the Metropolitan Water District, to institute the program. The program is the third stage in a five-part water conservation plan. If water supply problems worsen, Dominguez Water would move to more severe stages of deeper cutbacks.
