DESERT STORM : Political
President Bush called the initial phase of the war a success. “I think it is fair to say that we are pleased at the way things have gone so far,” Bush said as he opened a meeting with congressional leaders. “We are determined to finish what we have set out to do.” After meeting with congressional leaders, Bush and most top officials of his Administration attended a prayer service.
Members of Congress, including those who opposed use of force, quickly pledged their support of the president and American fighting men and women. “Now it is time for all of us to stand together in support for the U.S. and in support of our soldiers in the gulf,” said Rep. Lee H. Hamilton (D-Ind.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East.
