War Stories: CBS’ “Major Dad” will air an episode on Feb. 4 that examines how the Marines portrayed on the show are dealing with the gulf war. Executive producer Rick Hawkins stressed Thursday that the show, starring Gerald McRaney as a Marine Corps officer, is designed to entertain, not instruct. “A half-hour situation comedy is not the format to be addressing the pros and cons of an international conflict involving the loss of life,” he said. But he said because the show is about Marines, “we feel an obligation to address how they would react in this situation.” The show has no plans to send McRaney to the gulf on a subsequent episode.
