Call for Banking Investigation: Rhode Island Gov. Bruce G. Sundlun called for an independent prosecutor to investigate Rhode Island’s banking crisis. There have been widespread allegations that credit union insiders withdrew thousands of dollars from their institutions just before Sundlun closed 45 of them Jan. 1 after the collapse of the state’s private bank insurance system. Sundlun said his decision was not an attempt to thwart separate investigations by state Atty. Gen. James O’Neil and legislative leaders.
