Motorola to Promote Cellular Phone Standards: A tentative pact between Motorola, the largest maker of cellular phones, and DSC Communications Corp., a cellular switch maker in Plano, Tex., is aimed at expanding the entire market by allowing system operators to buy compatible equipment from a wide variety of sources. This same “open-systems” strategy is widely credited for fueling the personal computer industry’s growth in the 1980s.
