HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Buena Girls Post Win Over San Marcos, 81-42
Senior guard Lianne Ishikawa scored 16 points and added seven assists to lead Buena High to an 81-42 Channel League victory at Buena.
The Bulldogs (13-1 overall, 5-1 in league play) showed early they were not looking ahead to tonight’s game against national power Christ the King, a New York state team, taking a 20-6 first-quarter lead.
Senior guard Mia Palkie scored 12 points and had a team-high eight rebounds.
San Marcos senior forward Katie Hoelter lead all scorers with 21 points.
In other girls’ games:
Alemany 50, Chaminade 30--Junior center Sarah Guziel had 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the host Indians won their fifth consecutive Mission League game.
Alemany held the Eagles to two points in the first quarter. Alemany senior forward Torrie McCormick had seven steals.
The Indians played without leading scorer and Rachel Corelli, who was benched for disciplinary reasons.
Junior guard Maria Costa led Chaminade with 19 points.
Thousand Oaks 90, Simi Valley 49--Sasha Scardino and Michelle Palmisano scored 21 and 20 points for host Thousand Oaks (18-1, 7-0) in a Marmonte League game at home.
La Reina 47, St. Bonaventure 40--Tara Deukmejian scored 19 points and helped La Reina move into sole possession of first place in the Tri-Valley League.
St. Bonaventure (8-7, 3-1) had wining streaks of 16 in league play and 13 at home snapped by the Regents (4-0 in league play).
Kari Hawkins, who led the Seraphs with 17 points, and Joana Ziuraitis (10 points) both fouled out during the final four minutes with the outcome still in doubt.
When Ziuraitis left the game, La Reina took a three-point lead and extended it to 41-34 with 3 1/2 minutes left.
Village Christian 56, Montclair Prep 34--Senior forward Jana Kovar scored 32 points for Village Christian in an Alpha League game at Montclair Prep (5-9, 0-4).
Kovar, who had 27 points and 18 rebounds in a loss to Maranatha on Tuesday, also grabbed 24 rebounds and had four steals.
Amy Carlson added 10 rebounds for Village Christian (3-10, 1-3).
L.A. Baptist 61, Marshall Fundamental 36--Senior Karleen Cox scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to pace host L.A. Baptist (8-3, 3-1) to an Alpha League win.
Cheryl Towery scored 14 points and Marijane Unter had 12 points and six assists for L.A. Baptist.
Highland Hall 47, Pioneer Baptist 27--Highland Hall (8-5) avenged a 1990 playoff loss by scoring a school-record 24 points in the first quarter in a nonleague game at Highland Hall.
Kristen Johansen came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points and teammate Monica Palma added 15 points.
Carpinteria 58, Oak Park 55--Stacy Russell scored five of her 21 points in overtime for Carpinteria in the Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.
Kelli Romney led Oak Park (3-8, 1-3) with 20 points and 21 rebounds, 10 of them offensive. Teammate Marcy Reed added 18 points.
BOYS
Campbell Hall 71, Buckley 63--Austin McKellar scored 20 points and Alex Lopez added 18 as Campbell Hall (17-0, 4-0) won the Delphic League game at Buckley. McKellar had eight assists and three blocks and Lopez had seven rebounds. C.J. Thompkins added six assists.
Andy Biddle and Brett Wallette each scored 20 points for Buckley.
Highland Hall 56, West Valley Christian 47--John Klejnot scored 16 points, blocked nine shots and grabbed 17 rebounds to pace Highland Hall (7-5, 4-1) to a Westside League win at West Valley Christian (2-9, 1-5).
Ed Anastas also scored 16 points for Highland Hall.
