THE GULF WAR: The Battle Front : The Allies: Turkey
TURKEY AGREED to allow U.S. warplanes to take off from the NATO base at Incirlik for bombing attacks against Iraq, 440 miles away. The U.S.-led coalition has sought the vantage point to attack from a new direction, but some Turks were fearful of inciting an attack. The United States has 48 warplanes at the base, including F-16, F-15 and F-111 jets. Another 48 planes are expected.
