THE GULF WAR: The Home Front : Market Update
Oil: Prices fell sharply at the end of the trading day, plunging more than $2 a barrel to close at $19.25 in New York, the lowest level in six months.
Dow Industrials: The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 23.27 points to close at 2,646.78. Volume was heavy.
Credit Markets: Bond prices rose for a second day. Markets were briefly whipsawed by rumors that Saddam Hussein’s family had fled Iraq.
Metals: Gold prices stabilized after Thursday’s steep drop. In New York, it rose 80 cents an ounce to $374.20.
Dollar: The U.S. dollar closed broadly lower, sinking fast in the last hour of New York trading.
