Illness of Ceausescu’s Son Delays His Trial
BUCHAREST, Romania — The youngest son of Romania’s late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment Friday and failed to attend a session of his trial for embezzlement, court and family sources said.
Nicu Ceausescu, 39, has chronic liver cirrhosis but his condition became critical and he was taken to a Bucharest hospital, family sources said.
His defense lawyer, Paula Iacob, said he was too ill to appear in court.
Ceausescu is on trial for misappropriating public money in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu, where he was Communist Party secretary until his father was overthrown in December, 1989. He is accused of having spirited away more than $14,000.
He is also awaiting a court ruling on his appeal against a 20-year jail term for his role in a mass killing of demonstrators.
The court postponed the embezzlement trial until February.
