Australia completed a successful defense of the Little America’s Cup for catamarans when The Edge III trounced Chula Vista Yacht Club challenger Freedom’s Wing by 2 1/2 minutes and won the series at McCrae, Australia, 4-1.
The Australian boat, sailed by Simon McKeon and David Churcher, again showed superior speed over rivals Pete Melvin and Steve Rosenberg of Long Beach, leading all the way in the 19.5-mile race in winds of six-10 knots. It was the third time Australia had defended the cup since winning it from America’s Patient Lady VI in 1985.
