Golden Mikes: Three CNN correspondents were awarded special recognition Golden Mike Awards for “Excellence Under Fire” reporting from the Persian Gulf at the Radio & Television News Assn.’s awards ceremony in Beverly Hills. Bernard Shaw, Peter Arnett and John Holliman of Cable News Network were lauded by RTNA for their high-quality and on-going reporting of the war in the Middle East. “Their insightful, calm and measured reporting as bombs exploded around them is an inspiration to their colleagues around the world,” said Bill Yeager, president of the association. Other award winners at the annual recognition of the best in Southern California radio and television news were KCAL-TV for best 60-minute television broadcast and KNBC-TV and KMEX-TV for best 30-minute broadcast. For best radio newscast over 15 minutes the winner was KNX-AM and under 15 minutes the winners were KFI-AM and KLAC-AM. Best spot news TV reporting went to KCBS, KCOP and KDOC, all for fire coverage.
