City Wins $1.6 Million in Suit Against Refinery
A Los Angeles Superior Court jury has awarded Long Beach $1.6 million in damages after finding that a Northern California refining company breached an oil sales contract with the city in 1985.
Pacific Refining Co. was the successful bidder in December, 1984, on a contract to purchase 130,000 barrels of crude oil a month, but in the seventh month of the 18-month contract it unilaterally terminated the agreement, asserting that its breach was justified by significant changes in the oil market. Pacific is the owner of a refinery in Hercules, on San Pablo Bay about 15 miles northeast of San Francisco.
