Mission Viejo Recycling Finds Initial Success
MISSION VIEJO — The first South County municipality to offer citywide recycling is reporting success in its curbside program.
City officials say the 333 tons of glass, paper, plastic and aluminum recovered from Dec. 17 to Dec. 31, the first two weeks of the program, represent about 21% of all waste from homes in Mission Viejo during that period.
“We believe the initial results of ‘Mission Recycle’ are extraordinary,” said Mission Viejo City Manager Fred Sorsabal.
Sorsabal compared the cooperation of Mission Viejo residents to neighboring Irvine and Laguna Beach, where waste recovery runs between 14% and 17%.
“This reflects well on our many fine residents concerned about the environment, and we encourage everyone to keep up the good work,” he said.
The initial results of the Mission Viejo program show that about 15% of all trash in the city, including commercial waste, is being recycled.
