Man Shot in Police Stakeout Listed in Stable Condition
HUNTINGTON BEACH — A man shot by Huntington Beach police on a robbery stakeout outside a Ralphs supermarket is in stable condition, police and hospital sources said Monday.
Edward Caroll Padgett, 39, was shot in the leg Saturday night outside the Ralphs at 6942 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Mike Relic said.
Plainclothes police officers were watching the supermarket Saturday night because other stores in the area had recently been robbed.
Police watched Padgett enter the store about 8 p.m. and act “suspicious” before leaving without buying anything, Relic said. When police identified themselves and tried to stop Padgett, he fled, and was shot in the leg by a pursuing police officer, according to Relic.
He said Padgett was armed but would not say what type of weapon he had or if Padgett made any attempt to use it.
