PLATFORM : What About Skills?
Gov. Wilson’s proposal would create short-term problems for me because I’m a single parent. I just recently had a child--the baby’s 6 months old--and I have a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old.
I had to give up my job last April because I was having difficulties with my pregnancy. I wasn’t eligible for benefits on that job. I gave up the job to get (medical) coverage.
Allowing people to work to make up for any loss in (welfare) income makes sense. By working, parents set a good example for their children. However, it can be difficult to find reliable child care at an affordable price. However, if you don’t have infants and your youngest child is 6 years old, you should be ready to work.
I could go back to work if this proposal passes, but there will be controversy because some people don’t have any job skills.
