WORLD : Rebels Slaughter 29 in Sri Lanka
Hundreds of Tamil rebels shot or hacked to death 29 people, mostly women and children, in an early-morning raid today on a village, military officials said.
The officials quoted survivors as saying female guerrillas in camouflage outfits killed 15 children and nine women with machetes. Seven people were also wounded.
The survivors were quoted as saying about 300 Tamil Tiger rebels overcame military and police guards at Bogamuyaya, a jungle village 110 miles east of Colombo. The Tigers usually attack in groups of about 50 people.
There was no immediate report of the attack from the insurgent group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which issues statements from an office in London.
