Rebels Fire Rocket at U.S. Embassy in Peru, Attack Airport
LIMA, Peru — Attackers fired a rocket at the U.S. Embassy and set off a car bomb at the international airport in Lima Friday, wounding four people at the airport and causing some damage, police said.
The first attack occurred at 1:50 p.m. when a van carrying an apparent rebel commando unit drove by the U.S. Embassy and fired twice from a bazooka-style weapon.
An embassy spokesman confirmed the attack but said the explosive only damaged the air conditioner on the roof of the building, without causing injuries.
The security personnel guarding the embassy opened fire on the van, but the attackers were able to escape, the spokesman said.
Just minutes before, a car loaded with explosives blew up in the parking lot of the Jorge Chavez International Airport, seriously wounding four people and damaging at least eight vehicles, an airport spokesman said.
