The Rio Hondo Symphony will present a free classical concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 3 in the Whittier High School auditorium, 12417 E. Philadelphia St., Whittier.
First on the program will be Prokofiev’s “Lieutenant Kije Suite,” which was written in the 1930s as the music for a film of the same name. It follows a story line on the life of a mythical Lt. Kije in the Russian army.
The main feature will be Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major with guest soloist Carole Marie Harris. Harris grew up in Austin, Tex., and earned a master of musical arts degree from the Yale School of Music. The violinist has since studied under a Fulbright fellowship in Salzburg, Austria, and has performed throughout Europe and the United States. Her appearance in Whittier is being sponsored by the Fullerton Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon, international professional music fraternity. Harris was the 1989 winner of the Mu Phi Epsilon international competition.
Last on the program will be Dvorak’s Symphony No. 6 in D Major, which was written in 1880 with lyric melodies of a strong Bohemian identity.
The 75-piece community orchestra is in its 58th season. Many of the musicians are residents of Whittier and the Southeast area. It is Wayne Reinecke’s third season as conductor and music director.
This is the second of the symphony’s four free yearly concerts. Others are a classical program with piano soloist Patty Park on March 10, and a showcase concert for winners of the symphony’s young artists competition on April 20. That concert will include “Peter and the Wolf” by Prokofiev, with radio personality George Matthews as narrator.
