E. Germans May Have Helped ‘Stretch’ Scud
BONN — The former East German Communist regime may have helped Iraq boost the range of its Scud missiles, the news magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday.
It said investigators looking into West German firms suspected of having played a key role in “stretching” the Soviet-made Scud-B had discovered East German military records indicating that the former National People’s Army was also involved.
East German technicians had worked in Iraq on extending the missile’s range and the operation may have involved building Scuds in East Germany for Iraq, Der Spiegel said.
