World champion Carlos Sainz of Spain, in a Toyota, remained the leader in the Monte Carlo Rally at Aubenas, France.
He had a 39-second edge over Francois Delecour of France in a Ford after the second day. Defending champion Didier Auriol of France, driving a Lancia, dropped out after seven miles of the first stage.
