WEEKEND BOX OFFICE : A Super Weekend for Top Films

Despite the Super Bowl, moviegoing was up 40% over the same time period last year, with Fox’s “Home Alone” coming in first for the 11th consecutive weekend. The film has now topped $203 million. Among limited release films doing well: “The Grifters” (Miramax Films), with $3.3 million at 766 screens, an average of $4,322; “Green Card” (Touchstone), with grosses of $3 million on 381 screens, an average of $7,880; “Hamlet” (Warners), $2.4 million on 525 screens, an average of $4,602; “Once Around” (Universal), $544,102 on 52 screens--an impressive $10,464 per screen; and “Alice” (Orion), $1.1 million on 261 screens, an average of $4,244.

* Meanwhile, “The Godfather Part III” (Paramount) continued its descent, with just $1.8 million on 1,104 screens, for a per-screen average of $1,623 and 12th place on the chart.
