E. Gordon Hale, who had owned Victory Auto Service in Van Nuys and Hale Tire Service in Gardena, has died in a Van Nuys convalescent hospital. He was 80.

A longtime resident of Van Nuys, Hale died Saturday of complications of multiple strokes, his daughter, Sandra McGuern, said.

Born July 15, 1910, in Atlanta, Ga., Hale came to California in 1928 and operated several gas stations throughout Los Angeles for the Standard Oil, Union Oil and Tidewater Oil companies.

In 1955, he purchased Victory Auto Service, which he ran until 1963. He then started Hale Tire Service, which specialized in the sales of solid tires such as those used by airplanes, forklifts and off-road equipment. In 1971 he sold the company to Teledyne.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Reta Hale of Van Nuys; daughters Sandra McGuern of Northridge and Kathy Sandel of Hidden Hills; stepbrother Howell McLanahan of Jacksonville, Fla.; half-sister Margaret Wood of Jacksonville; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Visitation is planned from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Bastian & Perrott Mortuary, 18728 Parthenia St., in Northridge. Bastian & Perrott is handling the arrangements. A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church of North Hollywood at 4390 Colfax Ave. Burial will be private.
