A Los Angeles City Council committee voted Wednesday to pay political reformer Walter Zelman $90,742 a year to act as the city’s chief ethics officer.

On a unanimous vote, the Human Resources and Labor Relations Committee agreed to hire Zelman, former director of California Common Cause, for the newly created post approved by voters in the aftermath of the scandal surrounding Mayor Tom Bradley’s personal finances.

Although Councliman Joel Wachs initially was concerned about Zelman’s high salary, he was persuaded by Dennis Curtis, chairman of the city’s Ethics Commission, that the city needs to offer a high salary to attract a candidate of Zelman’s qualifications.
