Norwegians bade farewell to King Olav, the “People’s King,” in a somber funeral through the frozen streets of Oslo. Olav, who died Jan. 17 at the age of 87, was laid to rest in the royal crypt of the 14th-Century Akershus castle over the Oslo fiord after a funeral that was attended by royalty and political leaders from at least 100 countries. Crowds estimated at more than 100,000 people thronged outside the castle as light snow fell. Vice President Dan Quayle flew to Oslo to give condolences to King Harald, Olav’s only son.
