BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Taylor’s Little Shot in Overtime Caps a Big Comeback for Woodbridge

Romalis Taylor hit a five-foot bank shot with two seconds left in overtime to give Woodbridge High School a 69-67 victory over Corona del Mar in a Sea View League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Woodbridge.

The Sea Kings led, 34-17, at the half but Woodbridge picked up the pace with a full-court man-to-man press in the second half. Woodbridge’s Matt Murphy tied the score, 60-60, with a 22-foot shot at the buzzer in regulation.

Mike Fenton scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for Woodbridge (15-8, 5-2). Jon Upham had 23 points for the Sea Kings (4-3 in league).

In other Sea View League games:

Newport Harbor 69, University 66--Newport Harbor scored the game’s final 10 points after trailing, 66-59. University missed three one-and-one free-throw opportunities and had two turnovers in its last five possessions. Mike Klytta made a three-pointer with 22 seconds left for the winning points. University’s Ben Durham, who scored nine points and had 17 assists, missed a three-pointer as time ran out. Justin McIntee scored 22 points and Huy Nguyen 17 for Newport Harbor. Donnell Dowdy scored 19 points for University.

Tustin 78, Saddleback 59--David Beilstein scored 18 points and Thomas Clayton 17 to lead host Tustin (19-3, 6-1). The Tillers took control early and led, 46-32, at halftime. Jason Register scored 16 points for Saddleback (9-13, 3-4).

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 78, Loyola 61--In a game that included 67 turnovers--41 by Loyola-- Mater Dei outscored the Cubs, 20-8, in the third quarter and won easily at Loyola. J.J. Ballesteros scored 18, Reggie Geary 17 and Jason Janeski and Terence Wilborne 16 apiece for the visiting Monarchs (18-4, 6-1), the No. 1-ranked team in Orange County.

Santa Margarita 61, Bishop Amat 47--Mike Carpenter and Dan Bathey keyed a second-half run to lead host Santa Margarita (13-7, 3-4). Bathey scored 11 of his 13 points and Carpenter eight of his 20. The Eagles led by one at halftime, but outscored the Lancers, 36-23, in the second half.

Servite 64, St. John Bosco 45--Adam Anderson scored 17 points and Ryan Dodd added 13 for visiting Servite (15-6, 5-2). After trailing, 21-19, after the first quarter, Servite outscored St. John Bosco, 45-24, the rest of the way.

In the Arrowhead League:

Calvary Chapel 56, Sherman Indian 44--John O’Brien scored 27 points and had 22 rebounds and Brian Arrowood scored 12 points on four three-point baskets for host Calvary Chapel (6-11, 3-5).

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 53, Sonora 44--Richard Harvey had 20 points and 17 rebounds for visiting Buena Park (14-7, 6-1). Sonora outscored Buena Park, 8-4, in the third quarter to tie the score, 34-34, but the Coyotes made 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter. James Cannaday and Wilson Huang each scored 12 for Sonora (4-15, 2-5).

Sunny Hills 71, Troy 59--Bret Mitchelson had 29 points and Dominic Carnesi had 20 for visiting Sunny Hills (6-1 in league). Troy cut the deficit to five points, 63-58, with two minutes left but Sunny Hills made eight free throws down the stretch to hang on. Randy Abbott had 16 point for Troy (6-13, 2-5).

La Habra 74, Fullerton 69--Wendell Wickersham had 24 points and 12 rebounds and host La Habra (6-15, 1-6) made 15 of 17 free throws. Craig Olson had six three-pointers and 25 points for Fullerton (4-3 in league).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 81, Santa Ana 63--Brandon Jessie scored 21 points and John Khamis had 18 for Edison at Santa Ana. Chauncey Woolridge scored 33 for Santa Ana.

Huntington Beach 76, Fountain Valley 60--Mustapha Abdi scored 37 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for host Huntington Beach.

Ocean View 65, Westminster 52--Marcel TenBerge scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Randy Karliner scored 16 points for host Ocean View (13-8, 7-2).
