THE SIDELINES : Johnson-Lewis Rematch Is Set
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Johnson, Carl Lewis and Leroy Burrell will compete in a 100-meter dash at an international track and field meet in Malmo, Sweden, on Aug. 5, the Swedish news agency TT said today.
How much each would be paid was uncertain.
“We won’t tell. It could be because they get so little,” said Bengt Bendeus, head of MAI, organizer of the event. “This is not where they are supposed to earn millions of dollars. But it is the highest we’ve ever paid for any athletes.
“We know of their schedules this season and the chance of the three meeting before this date is very small.”
Johnson, the former world record-holder, and Lewis, the present record-holder, have not met since Johnson was disqualified from the 1988 Olympics after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. Burrell is the world’s top-ranked 100-meter runner, with Lewis No. 2.
