Students Films Go Hollywood
In the movie business, there’s no substitute for getting your work seen. Just ask the people in the radio-television-film department at Cal State Northridge.
Battling for recognition amid better-known programs at USC and UCLA, CSUN is moving its student showcase--appropriately enough--to the Directors Guild of America theater in Hollywood.
“A lot of people don’t even know we have a film program at Northridge,” said Myron Murakami, showcase coordinator. “It’s a way to let people know we exist.”
Having rented the Hollywood theater for Thursday evening, the department will screen short films from five students. Robert Wise, an Academy Award-winning director, known for “The Sound of Music” and “West Side Story,” will serve as guest host.
Among the young directors who will be featured are Serj Minassians, a past award winner at the San Jose Film Festival, and Stephen Jay Schwartz, whose work has been shown at the 1990 L.A. International Film Festival and the Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Film Festival.
The screenings begin at 8 p.m., and admission is free.
