Clara Wolter, a former Glendale piano teacher who retired at age 85 after teaching for 71 years, has died at a Los Angeles nursing home. She was 107.

Miss Wolter died Tuesday of complications of her advanced age, said Sidney A. Adair, a longtime friend.

Born in Anaconda, Mont., Miss Wolter studied at the Utica Conservatory of Piano, later teaching at Montana State College in Bozeman and at the University of Montana in Missoula. She moved to Glendale in 1922 and taught classical music in her home.

She retired in 1968, but continued to practice daily for her own pleasure well into her 90s. On her 100th birthday, she gave a recital at her Glendale residence, consisting of her own compositions in addition to those of her favorite composers.

She was a director of the Bleitz Wildlife Foundation for many years and had been a patron of many Glendale music organizations.

She has no immediate survivors. No services are planned. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Glendale, is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Miss Wolter’s name to the Bleitz Wildlife Foundation at 1100 Glendon Ave., Suite 1400, Los Angeles 90024.
